Iftar Dinner Held in Honor of Bangladeshi-American Muslim Community in the Bronx: A Gathering Marked by Spiritual Reflection and Community Unity

On Friday, March 13, 2026, local elected officials in the Bronx, New York hosted an Iftar dinner in honor of the Bangladeshi-American Muslim community. The event was organized by Senator Nathalia Fernandez, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Assemblymember Karines Reyes. The program took place at P.S. 106.
The holy month of Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and attaining taqwa (God-consciousness) for Muslims. Iftar, the meal to break the fast at sunset, is not only about nourishment but also serves as a meaningful occasion to promote compassion, unity, and a sense of community. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever provides food for a fasting person to break their fast will have a reward like theirs.” Inspired by this teaching, the Iftar gathering was organized in a spirit of generosity and togetherness.
The program was moderated by Mohammed N. Mujumder, Chairman of Community Board 9 and Master of Law.
People from all walks of life from the Bronx and surrounding areas attended the event. The hall was beautifully decorated, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere filled with warmth and camaraderie. Prior to Iftar, prayers were offered seeking peace, prosperity, and well-being for the nation, the community, and the global Muslim ummah.
Among the distinguished community leaders present were A. Islam Mamun, Mahbub Alam, Jamal Hossain, Tofail Chowdhury, Zakir (CPA), Hasan Ali, Abul Shahid, as well as leaders from the Bangladesh Society of the Bronx, New York Inc., including Convener Mohibul Haque and General Secretary Kazi Robiuzzaman. Also in attendance were Mohammad Fakhrul Islam, Gulzar Hossain, Nazmul Islam Russell, Mostakur Rahman Liton, Humayun Kabir Sohel, Ashfaqul Haque Chowdhury, Kazirul Islam Shipon, Sheikh Shafiqul Islam, Zahirul Islam, Raihan Parvez, Billal Islam, Bijoy Krishna Saha, Shafiqul Rahman, Fakhrul Islam Chowdhury, Abul Kalam Azad, and others.
Guests noted that such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening unity, mutual respect, and community bonds among Bangladeshi Muslims living in the diaspora.
