Strong Protest and Urgent Appeal from the Global Bangladesh Unity Network (GBUN): Serious Concerns Raised Over the Legitimacy and Impending Verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal

Progga News Desk:
The Global Bangladesh Unity Network (GBUN), operating from 3 Gregory Street, Wyoming, NSW, Australia, has issued a strong statement expressing deep concern and firm protest regarding the ongoing proceedings in the International Crimes Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The organization stated that the trial process is marked by serious legal, procedural, and ethical irregularities that urgently require international attention.
According to GBUN, the evident inconsistencies, lack of transparency, and allegations of political influence have raised fundamental questions about the fairness, impartiality, and adherence to internationally recognized standards of due process. These developments, the group warns, place both the judicial institution and the rule of law in Bangladesh in jeopardy.

The statement further notes that under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, Bangladesh achieved significant progress in development, economic growth, and international engagement. In such a context, initiating a judicial process that appears politically motivated risks undermining democratic stability and contradicts international norms related to justice and good governance.
Concerns Over Opaque Amendments to Tribunal Mandate
GBUN expressed alarm over reports that the mandate and structure of the tribunal were altered through unclear and legally questionable procedures. Amendments made without transparent parliamentary oversight, it stated, weaken the tribunal’s constitutional legitimacy and render the judicial framework controversial.
Key Concerns Highlighted by GBUN, Conducting trial proceedings in the absence of the accused, with the possibility of severe sentencing—actions inconsistent with international fair-trial standards ,Allegations of political interference within prosecutorial and judicial functions, undermining the impartiality of justice. Signs of selective or unequal application of legal measures, violating principles of equality before the law and non-discrimination.

Urgent Concerns Over Expected Verdict
GBUN stated that reports suggesting a verdict may be delivered as early as tomorrow are extremely alarming , Issuing a judgment under a process already marred by procedural flaws and contested legitimacy would, they assert, constitute a “serious miscarriage of justice.”
The organization warned that such a rushed verdict would , further erode transparency, violate core judicial due-process guarantees, and cause irreversible harm to democratic stability and the rule of law.
GBUN’s Position and Appeal to the International Community
Calling for the immediate suspension of the ongoing trial, GBUN emphasized that a judicial process rooted in ambiguity, lack of transparency, and disputed authority cannot meet international human rights and justice standards.
The organization stated unequivocally that any verdict delivered under the current judicial structure would be illegitimate, biased, and unacceptable.
GBUN called upon the United Nations, international human-rights bodies, diplomatic missions, and global institutions to urgently address the situation and support efforts to restore a lawful, transparent, and internationally compliant judicial process in Bangladesh.
