Street Named in Honor of Elizabeth White Markham in Astoria

Progga News Desk – New York:
A heartfelt ceremony was held in Astoria, New York City, on Sunday, May 11, to officially rename a street in honor of the late community activist Elizabeth White Markham. The unveiling of “Elizabeth White Markham Way” took place at the northwest corner of 44th Street and 28th Avenue at 1:30 PM.

The initiative was led by former New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, who is also the son of Elizabeth Markham. Reflecting on his mother’s legacy, Van Bramer said, “My mother lived in Astoria for over 50 years. She was a devoted volunteer and a pillar of community leadership. She spent decades fighting for civil rights—not just for the LGBTQ community, but for everyone.”

The ceremony was emceed by District 22 Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán. Distinguished guests included New York State Attorney General Letitia James, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, and former City Council Member Jimmy Vacca.

Representing the Bangladeshi-American community was senior journalist and editor-in-chief of IBN News and BAPSN News, Mr. Hakikul Islam Khokon. Family members, friends, local residents, and well-wishers of Elizabeth Markham also gathered to pay tribute.

In his closing remarks, Van Bramer extended his heartfelt gratitude to Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán for co-sponsoring the street co-naming initiative.

The event stood as a moving tribute to Elizabeth White Markham’s lifelong dedication to service and justice—cementing her name and legacy into the very streets she walked for decades.
