Applications Open for Queens Community Board Membership: Borough President Urges Civic Participation

Progga News Desk:
Residents of Queens now have an important opportunity to become directly involved in local development and civic affairs, as the application process for Queens Community Board membership has officially begun. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. has called on interested, qualified, and community-minded residents to apply. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on February 13, 2026.

According to the Borough President’s Office, Queens has 14 Community Boards, whose members serve on a voluntary basis and do not receive financial compensation. However, prior experience in community service, civic organizations, neighborhood initiatives, or local development activities will be considered an added qualification.

Applicants are required to clearly explain why they are suitable to serve on their local Community Board. Officials noted that this section allows candidates to highlight their experience, interests, commitment to their community, and long-term vision, helping ensure a transparent and fair selection process.

Guidelines state that all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on the online application form must be completed. Applicants are encouraged to prepare their essay-style responses in a separate document before submitting them online. If a question does not apply, applicants should indicate “Not Applicable.” Proof of address is also required and must be uploaded in the form of a driver’s license, state ID, IDNYC card, or a recent utility bill (photo or scanned copy).

For any technical issues or application-related questions, applicants are advised to contact Michael Carliere, Director of Community Boards, via email before the deadline.

The Borough President’s Office also noted that certain information provided in the application may be subject to public disclosure under the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). Completed applications will be shared with the relevant New York City Council Members, who will review and consider candidates for appointment within their respective districts. If appointed, an applicant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and professional information may be shared with the appropriate Community Board office.

Queens Community Boards play a vital role in the city’s civic structure. Their responsibilities include monitoring city service delivery, reviewing land use and zoning proposals, making recommendations to city agencies, and serving as a bridge between local residents and municipal government.

Commenting on the initiative, Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. said,
“This is a meaningful opportunity for residents who want to take an active role in improving their communities. Building a more inclusive and representative local government depends on strong civic engagement.”

Both new applicants and current members seeking reappointment must submit their applications by February 13, 2026.
