Strong Condemnation of Muhammad Yunus’s Remarks at Chatham House, London: Statement by the Bangladesh Students’ League (BSL)

Progga News Desk, NY, USA:
The Bangladesh Students’ League (BSL) unequivocally condemns the recent remarks and conduct of Mr. Muhammad Yunus during his appearance at Chatham House in London. His statements represent not only a betrayal of national dignity but also an open attack on the democratic foundation and sovereign identity of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

1. Misuse of Foreign Platforms to Disparage the Nation
Mr. Yunus’s appearance at Chatham House was part of an ongoing pattern of unofficial and unauthorized foreign visits that bring no diplomatic or strategic benefit to Bangladesh. Notably, this visit was not recognized as an official engagement by the UK government, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer did not grant him any audience—mirroring past diplomatic rejections from countries such as Qatar, France, the UAE, and India.
Rather than serving the interests of Bangladesh, Yunus used the platform to undermine its international image, making statements that can only be described as condescending and derogatory towards the people of Bangladesh.

2. Disdain for Democracy and the Constitution
One of the most alarming moments occurred when Chatham House Director Ms. Bronwen Maddox questioned Yunus on his proposed “reform charter” and his reluctance to subject it to public mandate. Instead of advocating for democratic validation through referendums or elections, Yunus tacitly dismissed the electorate’s capacity for informed choice—exposing the fundamentally undemocratic nature of his agenda.
Yunus’s so-called “Charter” is an affront to Bangladesh’s hard-earned constitutional legacy—born of the 6-Point Movement, the 1970 electoral mandate, and the sacrifice of millions during the 1971 Liberation War. His actions seek to erode that sacred foundation under the pretext of reform.

3. Deeply Offensive Remarks About the Bangladeshi People
What shocked and outraged Bangladeshis the most were Yunus’s highly offensive remarks about the electorate. Referring to voters, he stated:
All the complicated things you tell them, they say, ‘Oh, forget it, you give me some money, I’ll give you my vote, that’s all.’ That’s why we said, we don’t want to go down that path…”
Such sweeping generalizations paint the Bangladeshi people as ignorant, corrupt, and incapable of democratic participation. This is not only factually incorrect but reveals Yunus’s elitist contempt and anti-people worldview.

4. Reckless Statements on Corruption and Foreign Policy When asked about Bangladesh’s relations with key partners like India and China, Yunus evaded the topic and instead launched into a broad and baseless attack on the character of the entire population, saying:

“Everything is corrupt. People are corrupt.”
These remarks are not only reckless but also serve to malign Bangladesh in the eyes of the global community—feeding harmful stereotypes and undermining the nation’s progress.
5. Rejection of Yunus’s Illegitimate Authority and Agenda
Mr. Yunus holds no elected office. His rise to influence is the result of coordinated conspiracies, undemocratic power grabs, and the exploitation of elite networks. Even at Chatham House, he inadvertently admitted that he lacks effective control over key state institutions—highlighting both his incompetence and the illegitimacy of his position.
His proposed reforms are, in reality, a façade for reconfiguring the state to serve a narrow coalition of foreign interests and domestic fundamentalists—threatening the secular, democratic, and inclusive values on which Bangladesh was founded.
The Bangladesh Students’ League calls upon all democratic, secular, and progressive forces—at home and in the diaspora—to recognize the threat posed by Muhammad Yunus’s rhetoric and agenda. This is not just political opportunism; it is an orchestrated attempt to delegitimize the people, desecrate the Constitution, and destabilize the state.
We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to defend the sovereignty of Bangladesh, protect its democratic institutions, and preserve the legacy of the Liberation War.
In the face of distortion, we stand for truth.
In the face of elitism, we stand for the people.
In the face of conspiracy, we stand for the Constitution.
