Amid the busy routines of expatriate life in the United States, a vibrant celebration of traditional South Asian sport lit up the Bronx, New York, as the Bronx Carrom Association (BCA) hosted its colorful “BCA Doubles Carrom Tournament.” Held on Monday, April 6, at a local party hall, the day-long event turned into a lively gathering of the Bangladeshi diaspora.

Marked by precision, strategy, and intense competition, the tournament captivated hundreds of spectators. Rising above a strong field of competitors, the Bronx-based duo of Suhel and Khaled emerged as champions, demonstrating exceptional control and tactical skill throughout the competition.

The opening ceremony was conducted by BCA Joint General Secretary Suhel Ahmed and presided over by President Abdus Shahid. Ataur Rahman Selim, President of the Bangladesh Society and a former athlete, attended as the chief guest. Among the special guests was Abdul Hasim Hasnu, founding president of the Bangladeshi American Cultural Association and a noted community activist. The welcome address was delivered by BCA General Secretary Shah Ikbal Raju.

Other distinguished attendees included community leader Engineer Mohammad Abdul Khalek, Rezuena Razzak (Setu), Vice President of KR Shera Community Service, and Mohammad Salahuddin, a licensed insurance broker and P&C consultant.

In his remarks, the chief guest said, “Carrom is deeply rooted in our heritage. Events like this help connect the younger generation to their cultural identity, even while living abroad.” Special guest Abdul Hasim Hasnu emphasized the role of sports in strengthening community bonds and fostering unity within the diaspora.

The event drew participation from a wide cross-section of the community, including business leaders, athletes, journalists, cultural activists, and professionals, contributing to a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.

A total of 40 teams from various U.S. states competed in a knockout format. Each match was highly competitive and entertaining, culminating in a thrilling final that drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The Suhel-Khaled duo (Bronx, New York) claimed the championship title, earning $3,000 along with a trophy. The runner-up team, Enu-Sakawat (Ozone Park), received $1,800 and a trophy. Third place went to Kamrul (Senior) and Shahid (Michigan), who earned $800, while the fourth-place finishers were Rumon (Senior) and Kamrul (Junior), also from Michigan.

The tournament concluded in a festive and celebratory atmosphere. Organizers expressed their commitment to continuing such initiatives in the future and extended heartfelt gratitude to all participants, guests, and supporters.
