Diana Moreno Wins Queens Assembly Seat in New York City Special Election

Progga News Desk | New York City:

In New York City’s 2026 special elections, Democratic candidate Diana Moreno has secured victory in Queens’ 36th Assembly District, according to projections by The Associated Press. The results for three state legislative seats in Manhattan and Queens were finalized Tuesday evening.

Moreno defeated Rana Abdelhamid, who ran on the Queens for All party line, and Mary Jobaida, the People First party candidate, in a closely watched race that drew significant local attention.

The 36th Assembly District covers large portions of western and central Astoria, Ditmars, Astoria Heights, and northern Long Island City. The seat was previously held by Zohran Mamdani, who was elected in 2020 and later vacated the position after becoming mayor, prompting the special election.

Results were also announced Tuesday for the 74th Assembly District in Manhattan and the 47th State Senate District, developments that political observers say may reshape legislative dynamics in Albany.

Moreno’s win is being viewed as a notable shift in Queens politics, with supporters expressing optimism that her leadership will address local priorities and strengthen representation for the district’s diverse communities. Source: Hakikul islam Khokan.
